Overnight Caramel Strata

Total Time: 8 hrs 40 mins Preparation Time: 8 hrs Cook Time: 40 mins

Ingredients

  • Servings: 6
  • 1 cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons light corn syrup
  • 12 slices bread, crusts trimmed
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Recipe

  • 1 combine sugar, butter and corn syrup in heavy small saucepan.
  • 2 stir mixture over medium-low heat until butter melts and sugar dissolves.
  • 3 bring to a boil.
  • 4 pour into a a 9 x 13 inch glass baking dish.
  • 5 tilt dish to coat bottom evenl-cool.
  • 6 arrange 6 bread slices in singlelayer top caramel, trimming bread to fit.
  • 7 cover with remaining bread slices, trimming to fit.
  • 8 whisk milk, eggs,vanilla and salt in bowl to blend.
  • 9 pour over bread.
  • 10 cover and refrigerate overnight.
  • 11 preheat oven to 350.
  • 12 bake strata uncovered until bread is puffed and lightly golden, about 40 minutes.
  • 13 let stand 5 minutes.
  • 14 cut into 6 portions.
  • 15 using a spatula, invert each portion onto plate so that caramel side faces up.
