Potato Cheese Braid

Ingredients

- 1 ounce active dry yeast (1 package)
- 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 2 tablespoons instant mashed potatoes, granules
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/3 cup milk
- 1/4 cup butter or 1/4 cup margarine
- 2 eggs
- 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- additional butter or margarine
Recipe
- 1 in medium bowl, mix yeast, 3/4 cup of the flour, the salt, sugar and potato granules.
- 2 heat water, milk and butter to very warm (butter need not melt). add to first mixture. beat at medium speed for 2 minutes. add eggs and 1/4 cup more flour. beat at high speed for 2 minutes. stir in cheese and enough flour to make a soft dough.
- 3 turn out on lightly floured surface. knead until smooth and elastic. put in oiled bowl, turning to oil top. cover with a sheet of plastic wrap. let rise in warm place for 45 minutes or until doubled.
- 4 punch dough down. divide into 3 portions. roll each portion into an 18-inch strand. braid loosely on greased baking sheet, sealing ends. let rise in warm place for 30 minutes or until almost doubled.
- 5 bake at 375 for 30 minutes or until golden brown. brush with butter, if desired. cool on wire rack.
