Old-fashioned Gingerbread

Ingredients

  • Servings: 12
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup hot water

Recipe

  • 1 preheat oven to 350°f (175°c).
  • 2 grease and flour a 9-inch square pan.
  • 3 in a large bowl, cream together the sugar and butter.
  • 4 beat in the egg, and mix in the molasses.
  • 5 in a bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, cloves and salt.
  • 6 blend into the creamed mixture.
  • 7 stir in the hot water.
  • 8 pour into the prepared pan.
  • 9 bake 1 hour in the preheated oven or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • 10 allow to cool before serving.
